Style We Love- Laura

Laura has been a friend of ours for over ten years. Back in college while other coeds were out chugging beers in sweatshirts, Laura could be found in a fashion forward ensemble over a martini. She's a classy throwback. Her style was prim and proper with an edge back in college- think Lacoste, but always with a unique "Laura" twist. It's been fun watching the evolution of her personal style over the years. She was chic and sophisticated at twenty-two, and nothing has changed.

What is your current occupation/ If youʼre a student what are you studying?
Makeup Artist.  I was in Advertising for 8 years (CU Journalism School Grad) and left to pursue what I love.

What (and who) are you wearing?
Tucker for Target dress, Alice & Olivia jacket, Kate Spade sequin tights, and Frye boots.  Complimented by my fabulous Frisk necklace, which has a gold lion, which I adore because I'm a Leo.  My lipstick is MAC "Gladiola" which was from the Dame Edna collection years ago.

Where did you grow up?
Yuma, Colorado. My mom kindly bought me every Allure and Seventeen magazine I could get at 7-11.

Describe your style when you were 12 years old
I went through a phase where I only wore black and white clothing, including one black ked sneaker w/ white scrunchy sock and the opposite colors on the other foot.

How did where you grew up influence your style?
Because I was an avid magazine reader, while I only got to shop at The Buckle in Sterling in high school, I always had my sights on designer clothes.  I still love Neiman Marcus!  I always wanted things that were unique.

Who are your fashion icons? Who are you inspired by?
I love the style of Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman.  Women who dress ladylike but add their own personality. I also pull a lot of inspiration from the people I see around the city.

How would you describe your current personal style?
Proper quirky

Whatʼs a fashion trend/look you would never wear?
I don't wear much cotton or pull-over sweaters.  Never turtlenecks or v-necks or orange.  I only buy things I really, really love and that speak to me, so my closet is becoming full of wild bright things piled on top of one another with a textured cardigan or a scarf on top.  I believe in quality over quantity, so H&M or Forever 21 aren't really my thing.

What do you love most about NYC? what do you miss from Colorado?
I love the energy of the city and having endless things to do, even if the best thing is a glass of wine by my fireplace.  I really miss the mountains, though I wasn't much of an outdoorsy girl, I miss the view.  And the air, such magical fresh air and sunshine!!

Can you talk about how makeup and cosmetics relates to your wardrobe?
I use makeup as an accessory.  The pop of a red or violet lipstick (try the new YSL Holiday collection or MAC Amplified formulas) can turn an okay outfit into a pulled-together look.  A little effort goes a long way, and makes you stand out from the crowd.  Even if you're just running to the grocery.

Thank you Laura!

You can check out Laura's cosmetics work on her blog and her website. And she's an excellent resource for lipstick recommendations.

Cocktail Time

We wanted to create a fabulous Frisk cocktail for the holiday season, and who better to turn to than the amazingly innovative Evan Faber, beverage director at SALT the Bistro. For our drink Evan decided to turn up the heat and get frisky as the cold weather approaches.

"Chocolate en Fuego"
1.5oz Your favorite Reposado Tequila
.5oz Peppermint Schnapps (or Rumpleminze)
Add above ingredients into a cup of rich hot chocolate
Top with a small dash of Cayenne pepper-- just enough to warm the palette.

A cocktail dress doesn't need any spicing up, but of course a little tequila never hurts. It's the perfect winter trifecta: A warm cocktail, a hot holiday dress and radiant 1950's rings. Even though it's chilly outside you can still sport a little ice on your fingers.

Visit Evan at SALT and create your own custom cocktail through his unique DIY libation program, the Cocktail Element. Inspired a pre prohibition cocktail model, all infusions are made from scratch and in house. It's a cocktail experience you don't want to miss.

Thank You for Being a Friend

We recently asked NYC jeweler Karen Yost the inspiration behind her collection of jewelry entitled “The Girls,” which pays tribute to the late eighties television program “Golden Girls.” Yost’s jewelry has been worn by Drew Barrymore, Gwen Stefani, Cyndi Lauper, Janeane Garofolo and Amy Sedaris.

"I have been an avid fan of the 1980's program The Golden Girls since I was a little girl. To this day I find the humor infectious, the actresses hilarious, and the issues timeless. That is to say, even though I have seen every episode more than a few times I never tire of them. I made the series 'The Girls' to pay homage to my favorite cultural icons. To do them justice, I made them into actual icons in the form of quasi religious charms. May The Girls live forever in our memory!-" Karen Yost.

Style We Love- Emilie

It's hard not to notice Emilie's style. She's bohemian yet chic, earthy and glamorous with hints of rock and nods to her Wyoming upbringing. She always looks cool and unique, but never like she's trying to hard. We caught up with her on Pearl Street while she was cruising on her bike.

What is your current occupation? If you’re a student what are you studying?
I am currently a full time student, yogi, and experiencer of life to the fullest. I
study advertising with a spanish emphasis in the School of Journalism and Mass
Communication at University of Colorado at Boulder. I also work part time at CorePower Yoga (I am OBSESSED with it!)
What (and who) are you wearing?
I am wearing some Frisk jewelry... the emphasis of my wardrobe. I can't tell you
how many compliments I have gotten on my snake armband! Some ribbed up
jeans from Bershka in Barcelona, Spain and a Bebe tank top. I'm cruisin' on my Paul Frank bike.
Thanks Emilie, the jewelry looks great on you. Where did you grow up?
Born and bred in Jackson Hole, Wyoming! Shout out to the Cowboys.
Describe your style when you were 12 years old.
Oh wow. Do I have to? Tomboy. I wore Jenco Jeans (is that how you spell it?).
They were SUPER baggy with ridiculous cartoon characters on the pockets. I let
them sag as much as possible without falling completely off. Let's just say
everyone goes through their awkward stage.
How did where you grew up influence your style?
I definitely incorporate a lot of bead work and turquoise from the Native
American influence in Wyoming. My mom owns a "rhinestone cowgirl" shop that
in its entirety is definitely not my style but it has always brought out a very
personalized flair that is associated with me.
Who are your fashion icons? Who are you inspired by?
Anything vintage no matter how ridiculous and "out of style" it is seems
absolutely wonderful to me. I tend to sway towards the boho relaxed look of
Lauren Conrad with a little more pizazz. I would like to think that I have
the cowboy influence of Wyoming, the hippie yogi side of me, and the sex and
rock and roll side when I'm feeling it.
How would you describe your current personal style?
Boho living in Boulder. Much more relaxed than six months ago while living in
Barcelona. There it was heels 7 days a week. No matter how defiant your style,
you're always influenced by your surroundings.
What’s a fashion trend or look you would never wear?
Hello Kitty. UGH it's ALL OVER Europe. What is with that? Although, I'll also never say never. Let's just say it may be more of a halloween costume!

Thanks Emilie!
